Bullfighting has just been banned in Catalonia to come into force 2012. Seems irrelevant? Animal welfare activists have been fighting for this for many years and were never expected to overturn the strong culture which kept this cruel 'sport' going. Many of the same activists are involved in trying to get something done about the galgos. Each little advance made in animal welfare contributes to a change in social perceptions of the welfare issue, making it that little bit more unacceptable and supporting further change. Just one country banning an activity puts pressure on neighbouring countries to look harder at their own welfare issues. This amazing step forward just goes to show that each voice that is raised against cruelty can really help to make a difference so hopefully the greyhound voice will be heard before too much longer.
